Alberta Remembers: Recalling Our Rural Roots

In honour of Alberta's Centennial, the majestic beauty of the grain elevator is celebrated by artist Karen Brownlee and author Ken Tingley in 128 vibrant paintings with descriptive text. Based on the artist's Rural Prairie Communities series, Alberta Remembers pays homage to this rapidly disappearing icon that played such a central role in the development of the Prairie West. Includes forewords by Jane Ross, Curator, Western Canadian History, Royal Alberta Museum and Daniel T. Gallacher, Curator Emeritus, Canadian Museum of Civilization.

Karen Brownlee's art focuses on landscapes, rural Alberta communities and grain elevators. Her watercolour series, Rural Prairie Communities, has been exhibited in galleries throughout Alberta, and her Back Home 2005, a touring centennial exhibition, premiered at the Royal Alberta Museum. Karen Brownlee has been a juror for the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Alberta recipient of the Davis and Henderson Intercheques Prairie Heritage Preservation Award and is the Founder of the Artist in Residency Program, City of Lethbridge. Karen Brownlee lives in Lethbridge, Alberta, with her husband and two children.

Ken Tingley is a historic resource consultant, author and editor who has lived and worked in Edmonton for most of his life. His interest in grain elevators was stimulated when he wrote A History of the Ester Grain Elevator for Alberta Community Development.
